Opinion: Devin Booker Needs To Be In The NBA MVP Discussion

MVP Booker, Devinfor

As the NBA season’s end draws near, this statement must be made public.

The Phoenix Suns are the top team in the NBA. They are the only team that has secured a playoff spot. With a record of 58-14, they are nine games ahead of the second-best team in the Western Conference.

However, there isn’t much or any discussion about the league’s Most Valuable Player being named as the best player on the best team.

That has now ended.

Conflict among Arizona sportsbooks for Booker MVP

People in Arizona who use sports betting sites still have the opportunity to place bets on Booker winning the MVP award. Currently, the majority of sportsbooks in AZ are offering bettors high odds on D-Book to secure the MVP title.

Let’s be honest, Booker stands a good chance of winning the prize. However, it’s ridiculous that the best individual from the best team has such a narrow likelihood of success.

Why is that so?

The NBA MVP award frequently turns into a “narrative” award. It doesn’t always go to the best player of the season, but rather to the player who appears to deserve it the most.

  • One could argue that Michael Jordan experienced half of it. Out of the six final times the Chicago Bulls had in the 1990s, Jordan was awarded the MVP title four times.
  • Charles Barkley secured the win for the Phoenix Suns during the 1992-93 season.
  • From 1996 to 1997, the prize for the Utah Jazz was taken home by Karl Malone.

While some individuals considered Jordan to be the top player during those periods, he did not win as voters believed another person was more deserving of the title.

“The Big Man” appears to be in full swing this year.

Clearly, Nikola Joki of the Denver Nuggets and Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers are the favorites. I’m not suggesting that they don’t deserve the honor or that they aren’t having successful seasons. However, are their seasons significantly better than Booker’s?

No.

An opportunity for D-Book to win the MVP Award.

The NBA MVP award is viewed as a significant acknowledgment. Fans often consider this distinction when compiling lists of the greatest players of all time and their tournament achievements. Simply put, securing the MVP is essential if you aspire to be remembered as an all-time great.

Currently in his seventh year in the NBA, Booker is 25 years old. He still has a considerable journey ahead before he can be compared to the players on the 75th Anniversary team. Nonetheless, this is part of the reason why he could be considered more “valuable” to his team than any other player.

When Chris Paul injured his finger, it was anticipated that Phoenix would struggle. However, they have continued to perform at a high level, largely due to Booker’s contribution. They’ve also made substantial progress in their standings position.

Other teams with MVP players such as the Philadelphia 76ers are letting go of key players to secure superstars like James Harden. Meanwhile, Phoenix is bolstering their ranks with supporting players to strengthen the team they currently possess.

Booker’s statistics support a case for MVP.

This section of the ball might be for the upper class.

To comprehend the impact Booker has on the Phoenix Suns’ victories, you must delve into his statistics.

This season, with an average of just under 26 points per game (25.9), Booker is ranked eleventh in the NBA.

Shall we put that into perspective?

In the current season’s fourth quarter (5.9), Booker is on the court for less than six minutes per game. To put it simply, the Suns’ top player only participates for half of the final period.

Why does that happen? Typically, it’s due to his team often having a substantial lead in games. The Suns are the NBA’s team with the highest point differential, defeating opponents by an average of 8.4 points per game.

In the NBA, a crucial statistic is known as the plus-minus, which quantifies a player’s influence on the game. It is calculated by determining the variation between a player’s team’s overall score and their opponent’s when the player participates in the match. Booker’s plus-minus stands at 6.9 points per game (ppg), surpassing both Nikola Jokić (5.5 ppg) and Joel Embiid (4.7 ppg).

All these statistics suggest that Booker is more crucial than any other MVP-worthy player this season when he’s on the field.

Settle the debate, Phoenix is stacked.

Despite the successful seasons of other candidates, the Suns’ success this year is largely due to having the strongest team lineup in the league. This fact undermines Booker’s MVP case. The argument is that the state believes Booker doesn’t need to contribute significantly for the team to win games.

This is precise.

Phoenix boasts an impressive roster brimming with comparable talent, masterfully assembled by head coach Monty Williams and public director James Jones. However, it doesn’t operate nearly as efficiently without Booker.

Today, the NBA has set a precedent with Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges. Moreover, the team’s bench is filled with sharpshooters and playmakers who have performed exceptionally throughout the season. The primary obstacle to Booker’s MVP case is the recent crucial off-season addition, Chris Paul.

Some experts attribute the Suns’ successful run to the NBA Finals last year and their ongoing enhancement mainly to CP3. However, it is difficult to confirm. We all know that the team was in disarray before he joined. Moreover, he finished in the fifth position in the MVP vote of the previous season.

Without question, the Suns wouldn’t be the top team in the group without Paul. Similarly, they might not be where they are without Booker. This year, Booker has elevated his game, which has positioned his team as the current favorite to clinch the NBA finals.

Despite the possibility that Booker may not secure the MVP award this time, it’s high time he started being honored in the same breath as players such as Embiid, Joki, and #263. It may require another immediate journey to the NBA Finals before D-Book starts receiving the recognition he rightfully deserves.
