Arizona Gaming Compacts Get Federal Approval, Here’s What’s Next

A new Yavapai-Prescott casino is again in the works after the federal government approved re-negotiated gaming compacts in May.

This year, Arizona sports betting surmounted a major hurdle. However, don’t expect legitimate sportsbooks to open at AZ tribal games and sports venues next year.

Much work remains before Arizonians can legally place bets, either in person or online. However, the swift approval from the federal government is promising. This also enhances the likelihood of online betting in Arizona before the year ends.

The authorities give approval for Arizona games compacts.

Three parties are included in the agreements that govern cultural entertainment in the United States:

  • The relevant cultural organizations
  • The appropriate condition
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) of the US Department of the Interior

In April, the Arizona legislature approved an enabling bill. This legislation, which represented renegotiated terms with the 16 tribal casino operators, was signed into law by Governor Doug Ducey a few days later.

The responsibility then laid with the BIA. The Bureau is tasked with reviewing all gaming compacts to ensure they align with federal gambling laws. On Monday, the BIA granted its approval.

How could this potentially affect the timeline for increased betting in Arizona, depending on which part of that expansion you’re referring to?

More actions are taking place at the tribal casinos in Arizona.

The new compact terms are now official, allowing AZ tribal casino operators to immediately launch the new table games that have been made available to them. These include:

  • Baccarat
  • Craps
  • Pai Gow Poker
  • Roulette
  • Bo Sic

The particles enable an increase in the total number of slot models available at the properties. The state’s full range of tribal casinos can accommodate an additional 6,300 machines across their facilities.

Once the individual casinos are able to develop them, the new gambling options will become available. This also applies to future games, although there may be some limitations.

Will Phoenix soon witness new gambling?

The new agreements allow a substantial increase in the number of gambling operations that the parties can manage under state arrangement. The total number at present is 55.

However, only four strategies are available. Two of them are housed in Phoenix, specifically in the Gila River Indian Community and the Tohono O’odham Nation. The users of the remaining two strategies are still in discussions about locations.

There is no scheduled groundbreaking for either Phoenix hospital. Local governments may still need to communicate with casino users regarding certain issues. However, from the state’s perspective, they are ready to proceed.

What is the status of online sports betting, financial bookmakers, and daily fantasy sports in Arizona? There is still progress to be made in these areas for the state.

Officials in AZ are now beginning their work.

It’s the Department of Arizona Gaming’s moment to shine. The department is presently in charge of crafting Dss and sports betting regulations for the entire state. It will need to make several decisions, including:

  • Conditions for registration and costs of license
  • Procedures such as economic interests tracking and stakeholder monitoring.
  • Tax rates for DFS/sportsbook revenue
  • Whether sports teams or center owners held non-tribal sports wagering licenses.

After the submission of the first draft, there will be a period for people to post responses. The department will then establish rules, which usually involve license applications.

After those are completed, regulators will evaluate animal applicants. The procedure slightly varies between virtual and financial bets once approval is granted.

Inspection for compliance with systems of real sportsbooks is usually faster than for online sports betting applications. Therefore, it’s common to see retail books launched before their online versions in the same market.

Interested parties eager to get started as soon as possible can begin setting up their physical casino locations in anticipation of receiving registration approval. When will this happen? Another indication is the acceptance from the federal government.

Arizona’s gambling launch in the fall of 2021 also looks promising.

The rapid approval of the compacts by the BIA paves the way for the potential launch of retail sportsbooks later this year. There’s a chance that a brand new sportsbook could be in place at the State Farm Stadium when the Arizona Cardinals kick off their 2021-22 season.

Restricted DFS and sports gambling could potentially go live online later this year or at the start of 2022. Regardless, the nationwide approval of Arizona gaming compacts offers promising prospects for AZ bettors.
