Jontay Porter, who recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his involvement in an NBA betting scheme, had his request to play professionally in Greece next season denied by a judge.
Porter’s attorney sent a letter on Tuesday to U.S. District Court Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall, seeking a modification of bond conditions. If approved, this request would have allowed Porter to continue his career with Promitheas BC in the Greek Basketball League.
However, Judge Hall ruled against the request.
Porter, formerly of the Toronto Raptors, received a lifetime ban for violating the NBA’s betting policy.
No Objections from Officials, Attorney Reports
Attorney Jeff Jensen wrote to Judge Hall, noting that both the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Pretrial Services Officer had «no objection» to the request.
The proposed modification to Porter’s bond would allow him to retrieve his passport, travel to Europe, and reside in Patras, Greece. Jensen argued that this modification would enable Porter to seize a valuable and rapidly closing opportunity to earn income through his primary skill set.
Jensen emphasized that, according to Porter and his agent, such an opportunity is unlikely to come around again. He also highlighted that Porter has a limited window to earn a living through professional basketball during his prime years as an athlete.
Priority Given to NBA Betting Case
Jensen reported that Porter will be accompanied by his family and closely monitored by his Greek team. He also mentioned that the team is aware that Porter may need to return to New York for court proceedings.
Porter is scheduled for sentencing on December 18 and faces up to four years in prison.
“This proposed modification will not impact the existing requirements for Porter to travel to New York for any court obligations. Mr. Porter and his prospective employer are fully aware of these ongoing requirements and understand that he could be summoned back to the United States on short notice. Additionally, this modification will not affect his current treatment plan, which is conducted virtually. Promitheas BC has also arranged for in-person counseling opportunities in Patras, Greece,” Jensen wrote.
